By 2012, it is projected that 42 percent of workers in the United States will be age 45 and older, up from only 37 percent in 2002. During this ten-year period, the number of workers ages 45 and older will grow by nearly 27 percent, whereas the number of workers ages 16 to 44 is expected to grow by only 3 percent.
These profiles are designed to provide information about each state's age 45+ workforce to enable individuals and organizations dealing with older worker issues to have a better understanding of this population in order to plan and implement programs related to them. This document provides information about age 45+ workers within each state, such as the number of hours worked per week, in which industries they work, and how many work in the private or public sector. In order to shed light on any demographic differences between workers and non-workers, demographic information is also provided for non-workers as well as workers.
