AARP's Social Security Q&A Tool

How soon do I become eligible for a spouse benefit under my new spouse's Social Security work record?

En español | In order to receive a spouse benefit, you must have been married at least one year. Suppose you're both 66. You get married and immediately apply for benefits. The Social Security Administration will allow the working spouse to receive retirement benefits, but the other spouse will not be able to receive spouse benefits until the marriage is at least one year old.
