AARP's Social Security Q&A Tool

I'm receiving survivor benefits before I've reached full retirement age. Will this affect how much I'll receive on my own work record when I reach full retirement age?

En español | No. When you switch, the fact that you began taking widow or widower benefits early will not have any effect on your own retirement benefit. You'll qualify for the full 100 percent amount.  When you file, the Social Security Administration will compare your survivor benefit to your retirement benefit and give you an amount equal to the larger of the two.
