Social Security benefits are paid in the month after they are due. So, if a person dies in the middle of June, the check that arrives that month is actually for the month of May. Thus, the deceased is not being overpaid and the estate does not have to give back anything.
However, Social Security does not issue partial-month payments. Because the person did not live for the entire month of June, no benefit at all is due for that month. If the family does not notify Social Security in a timely manner of the death, the full June benefit may be paid in July and the money would have to be returned.
