AARP's Social Security Q&A Tool

Can I earn money while collecting Social Security Disability?

SSA administers several programs to assist disabled workers in the labor force, including a trial work period and the "Ticket to Work" program. This program allows for a "trial work period" in which you may work for nine months and remain in the program. There is a three-month grace period that follows the trial work period. If you remain in the work force after the 12 months and earn above a specific amount, your disability benefits may be suspended. You should reach out to the Social Security Administration if you do decide to take a job or feel you can return to the workforce.
