AARP's Social Security Q&A Tool

I claimed Social Security before full retirement age and earn more than $15,480, so my benefit is reduced. How does the reduction in benefits for working get returned? Or do I lose it forever?

When you reach full retirement age your benefits will be recalculated based on the number of months you did not receive a benefit. Each of these months will count as a month you delayed retirement and will increase your benefit by a fraction of a percent.
