This AARP Public Policy Institute fact sheet highlights the employment situation for older persons as of April 2012. At 6.3 percent, the April unemployment rate for persons aged 55 and older was little changed from March’s 6.2 percent.
Nearly 2 million older people were out of work and looking for a job in April. Average duration of unemployment among older jobseekers rose to 60 weeks in April; the percentage of long-term unemployed was higher as well and far higher than it had been at the start of the Great Recession.
