This AARP Public Policy Institute fact sheet highlights the employment situation for older persons as of January 2012.
The seasonally adjusted overall unemployment rate fell to 8.3 percent from 8.5 percent between December and January. About 12.8 million people aged 16 and over reported that they were outof work and looking for a job in January, a decline of 339,000 since December.
The unemployment rate for people aged 55 or older also fell—from 6.2 percent in December to 5.9 percent in January, the first time it has been below 6 percent since February 2009.
