Workplace Culture/Continued Opportunities: NVMC offers the following learning and development programs to its full- and part-time employees working at least 24 hours per week: tuition reimbursement, online training, and certification classes. In-house classroom training is offered to all employees with no mandatory hourly minimum.

The company celebrates long-service anniversaries with announcements, parties, and awards.

Responding to employee feedback, the company now offers computer-training programs as the health care field moves from manual documentation to online record-keeping and incident reporting. Employees gain new experiences and develop new skills by working on temporary assignments in other departments, on team projects, and via access to a formal job-rotation program.

Benefits/Health: Full- and part-time employees working at least 24 hours per week are offered individual and family medical coverage, individual and family prescription-drug coverage, individual and family vision and dental insurance, individual and family long-term care insurance, and short- and long-term disability. The company offers employees an FSA, HRA, and an HSA to assist in covering out-of-pocket health care costs.

Benefits/Financial: NVMC offers a 401(k) plan with employer match to its full- and part-time employees. All new hires are automatically enrolled in the plan, employees may invest in lifecycle funds, and employees 50+ can make catch-up contributions. Employees receive financial-planning information from members of the staff, from the firm that administers their 401(k) plan, and from external financial-planning experts. In addition, NVMC offers onsite retirement workshops on financial planning, estate planning, and college savings.

The company offers paid time off specifically designated for caregiving, short-term time off without pay, and long-term leaves of absence without pay to allow for caregiving.

The following wellness programs are available to full- and part-time employees: flu shots, health screenings, smoking cessation programs, physical activity and exercise programs, weight loss program/counseling, and stress management training. Thirty-three percent of NVMC employees have used at least one of its wellness benefits during the past 12 months. The company offers full- and part-time employees referral services to assist with child care and eldercare.

Benefits/Alternative Work Arrangements: NVMC offers alternative work arrangements, such as flextime, job-sharing, and telecommuting, to its full- and part-time employees working at least eight hours per week. A compressed work schedule is available to employees working at least 12 hours per week. Full-time employees are eligible to move to part-time work on a permanent and temporary basis.

Opportunities for Retirees: The company currently has four retirees and an employee directly responsible for retiree relations. NVMC stays connected with retirees by inviting them to organization events and celebrations, by providing ongoing access to retirement planning workshops and information, and by formally acknowledging employees on the occasion of their retirement. NVMC offers retirees temporary work assignments, consulting and contract work, telecommuting, and part- and full-time work.
