This year, Securian marks its fifth appearance on AARP's list of Best Employers for 50+ Workers Over 50. Twenty-three percent of the workers at Securian are age 50+, and their average tenure is 17.7 years. The company offers courses designed for age 50+ workers, including topics such as mental health, retirement security, and family caregiving. Securian has occupational health nurses on staff to address employees' health and medical concerns. All Securian's employees have access to individual and family long-term-care insurance.
Securian employees who are approaching retirement can participate in the company's noontime seminars focusing on retirement planning.
Workplace Culture and Continued Opportunities: Securian offers the following training and development opportunities to full- and part-time employees who work at least 20 hours per week: in-house classroom training, online training, and certification classes. Employees who work 30 or more hours per week are eligible for tuition reimbursement. During the past 12 months, 90 percent of the company's employees participated in at least one of its training opportunities. On average, each employee spent 17 hours in such training. In addition to more than 100 in-house training and development courses, Securian offers courses of particular interest to employees age 50+. These classes discuss physical and mental health, retirement and financial security, and family caregiving.
Securian recognizes long-service employees with announcements, parties, and awards. Every year, the company conducts an all-staff event which updates employees on the company's goals and mission and entertains them, too. Employees can also evaluate the all-staff meeting. Using their feedback, the company has made leadership changes and provided training in teamwork.
Workers at Securian are able to gain new experience and job skills through temporary assignments in different departments, team projects, and access to a formal job-rotation program. Securian accommodates employees who fall ill or need to care for a family member by providing an extended-leave policy that includes up to six months of leave.
Benefits/Health: Full- and part-time employees who work 20 hours or more per week can receive individual and family medical, prescription-drug, vision, dental, and short-term-disability coverage. Employees who work a full 40-hour week are eligible for long-term-disability coverage. All employees receive individual and family long-term-care insurance.
Securian helps employees cover their out-of-pocket health-care costs by offering health flexible spending accounts (FSA). The company offers retirees under or above age 65 the following benefits: individual and spousal medical, prescription-drug, vision, long-term-care, and life insurance. Securian also offers domestic partner benefits to retirees and to current employees.
Benefits/Financial: Full- and part-time employees at Securian can participate in a defined-benefit plan, a stock-options or profit-sharing plan, and the company's 401(k) plan. The company automatically enrolls all employees are into the plan. Employees can choose to invest in life-cycle funds, and employees age 50+ are able to make catch-up contributions to the plan. Members of the Securian staff, representatives of the 401(k) financial firm, and external experts—all contribute to the financial training of employees.
Securian provides noontime seminars and weeklong pre-retirement seminars for workers age 50+. The company allows workers paid time off and unpaid short- and long-term leaves of absence to provide care to a child or family member. Securian also offers its own extended-leave plan, of up to six months, to employees.
