Q: Peter, I am planning a trip to Washington, D.C. Are there any hotels within walking distance of White House, or other points of interest?
–Barbara Asher, St. Peters, Mo.
A: Barbara, in the heart of Washington, there are literally dozens of hotels that are either within walking distance of major attractions or within one or two subway stops.
A few of my favorites are the Mayflower Hotel at 1127 Connecticut Avenue, N.W., the Hay-Adams Hotel at 800 16th Street, N.W., the Sofitel Lafayette Square at 806 15th Street, N.W., the Washington Doubletree Hotel at 1515 Rhode Island Avenue, N.W., and the Churchill Hotel at 1914 Connecticut Avenue, N.W.
All these are within about a five- or six-block radius of the White House. They are also just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the Smithsonian, the Capitol, the National Mall, and many other landmarks.
If you don't mind taking a taxi or the Metro/subway a short way, consider staying in quaint Georgetown, which is a fun neighborhood in its own right. Hotels such as the Four Seasons and Georgetown Suites are within walking distance of the neighborhood's many galleries, restaurants, and other points of interest—for example, Georgetown University, Dumbarton House, and the Potomac River.
