Although technically, you can throw a computer into a box, ship it and hope for the best, you probably won't be covered should something go wrong.

The bottom line is if the item isn't properly packed, it may not be insured for damage. But there is help. For example, the UPS Store offers the Pack & Ship Promise: If a participating location packs and ships your items via UPS and there is any loss or damage in transit, you will be reimbursed. If you're not sure whether you've properly packed your items, ask. FedEx, for example, even has boxes specially designed to protect electronics such as a laptop or mobile phone.
