Q: My partner and I have been together for 30 years and are planning on celebrating this anniversary by traveling to some places around the country we'd always wanted to go. I was wondering if you could provide some resources on how to find good gay-friendly hotels and accommodations. Thank you.

A: Congratulations on your anniversary, Graham. Here are some resources that offer hotel information across the country, along with a few other gay travel resources you might find helpful.
If you already know where you'd like to go, Purple Roofs has long been the go-to website for LGBT travelers searching for a friendly place to stay. It has a wide array of listings throughout the world, from luxury hotels to affordable bed-and-breakfasts to individual condos and apartment rentals.
The site also distinguishes between gay-friendly and gay-owned, and spells out which travelers are specifically welcomed at certain establishments: from men-only resorts in Palm Springs, to inclusive hotels that welcome all genders and sexual orientations. Even better, some accommodations offer modest (usually 5 percent) discounts for mentioning Purple Roofs.
Tag-Approved is owned and operated by Community Marketing Inc., one of the biggest marketing outfits focusing on the LGBT community.Tag-Approved hotels are supposed to meet a laundry list of qualifications that demonstrate support for the community through policy and action.
Among the qualifications are nondiscrimination policies that include sexual orientation, LGBT diversity and sensitivity training, giving back to the community and hiring a diverse staff. Tag-Approved also invites complaints about any less-than-friendly behavior and promises to take them up with any offending hotels.
