San Diego Zoo
Without doubt, the San Diego Zoo is one of the great zoos on earth, driven by an ethos to protect species and a willingness to innovate. The zoo was among the leader in “cageless” environments. So-called “pygmy chimpanzees” (bonobos, which aren’t chimpanzees at all, but great apes; they solve their problems by making love, all the time) have a home here, as do many other rare animals. A treetop monorail circles the stomping (slithering, crawling, hopping) grounds of more than 4,000 individuals. When you’re not at the zoo, well, you’re in San Diego, with its gorgeous beaches, Spanish Colonial architecture and easygoing vibe. — Photo by Ken Bohn/San Diego Zoo/Reuters/Corbis
