Lake Mead, Nevada and Arizona
About 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas is one of the most beautiful accidental destinations in America, formed by the water impounded by Hoover Dam. It extends for 110 miles, and besides being warm year round, displays distant mountain ranges, canyons and rainbows of rock from its surface. So, if you had a group of eight friends, or an extremely cordial family, who could collectively spend $500 (or more) a day exploring this reservoir jewel, consider a houseboat. Hang out on the deck, change locations, stop for hours, sleep when you want, and pretty much get away from everything (except the other seven people). Houseboating is a charming and closer-to-nature alternative to cruising on boats the size of a strip mall, and Lake Mead is rated by travel pros as one of the great destinations to do it.
