An intersection of mountain, river, and desert ecosystems and a location on the American frontier make a visit to this park a quintessential Southwest vacation experience. It’s centered on the rugged Chisos Mountains, just north of the Rio Grande and deep in west Texas. The wide-open and wild slab of Chihuahuan Desert terrain is rife with rock art, wildlife, and opportunities to hike or take guided river trips.
