CRESTED BUTTE, COLORADO
Let’s just get this out of the way: Crested Butte can be cold, even by Rocky Mountain standards. But if you want great skiing, few crowds, good value and one of America’s last real ski towns, pack an extra jacket and head to the Butte.
The heart of town is a very walkable 10-block area peppered with Victorian-façade bars, cafes, inns and shops. A free shuttle runs the four miles to the ski mountain, which boasts a variety of terrain — from gentle rolling slopes to knee-quivering chutes — beneath the dramatic pyramid peak of the eponymous summit. The après-ski and dining options range from the varied wines and small plates at django’s to the fabled pizza at Secret Stash, and from the innovative cuisine at EastSide Bistro to the dozens of bars in town.
Lift tickets: Ages 65 and over, $65 (normally $87); 65+ rate before December 18 is $44.
