WINTER PARK, COLORADO
Clicking into our bindings makes some of us feel eternally young. For those still in doubt, Winter Park offers an adult race program designed for all comers, from skiers who have never raced to those who never stopped racing.
Training, which is limited to Fridays-Sundays, is led by experienced coaches. Skiers can pay by the day or buy a season package. Most of the 24 lifts at Winter Park and its adjacent terrain park, Mary Jane, serve at least some beginner terrain, but there’s no shortage of more challenging runs, including some of the best, and most scenic, glade skiing in Colorado. The resort also features tempting lodging deals, which are constantly changing — such as third-night-free packages during the holidays — along with guided snowshoe tours and heated snow-cat tours of the mountain. Winter Park is a 90-minute drive northwest of Denver and thus draws a day-trip crowd, but that makes for a mellower vibe compared to destination giants like Vail. The resort’s base elevation is 9,000 feet — read: thin air and light powder.
Lift tickets: Ages 65-69 pay $75; 70 and over, $49.
