Haunted Destinations You Can't Miss

Its Gothic mansions and sultry cemeteries are perfect for ghostly gallivanting. Spirits are said to wander the Marshall House, used as a hospital during a yellow fever epidemic. Anna Powers, who threw herself from the balcony over a lost love, haunts the 17 Hundred 90 inn. A specter in a black suit inhabits the Hampton Lillibridge house, and Confederate soldiers' ghosts are often seen roaming downtown streets.

The Mercer House — home of Jim Williams, the main character in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil — is said to be haunted by the man he allegedly shot during an argument, though Williams was acquitted in three separate trials. A pack of ghost dogs supposedly roams Bonaventure Cemetery, whose "bird girl" statue is the book's famous cover. Finally, patrons of The Pirates' House restaurant claim to hear songs of soused sailors who were "shanghaied" and dragged to the harbor for sale through a series of underground tunnels connected to the bar's rum cellar.
