Vermont-based Sojourn Bicycling and Active Vacations offers an outstanding tour in its own backyard. This six-day, five-night trips starts in Burlington, in northwestern Vermont. The route winds along gently rolling terrain through storybook villages and landscapes in the Lake Champlain Valley, between the Green Mountains and the Adirondacks.

Highlights include a visit to Shelburne Farms, founded in 1886, with a sampling of its renowned cheddar cheese; a stop in the classic New England college town of Middlebury (where travelers stay in the iconic Middlebury Inn, right on the town green); and pedaling quiet roads past country barns and Holstein cows, and through postcard-perfect traditional covered bridges. Special extras include a private cruise across Lake Champlain with a picnic in the historic town of Essex and a naturalist-led kayak tour of the lake's waterfowl and wildlife.
