James Madison's Montpelier
In Orange, Va., the lifelong home of James Madison, "the Father of the Constitution," underwent a massive architectural restoration. Officially unveiled Sept. 17, 2008 (Constitution Day), the $25 million restoration returned the mansion to its appearance in the 1820s.
Don't miss:
- A performer dressed as Dolley Madison will greet and chat with visitors July 2 and 3 as part of Montpelier's "Spend the Weekend with the Madisons" program, which runs through Sept. 25. Dolley's hospitality was legendary and set the tone for future first ladies.
- A Freedman's Farm Tour and a Confederate Winter Camp Site Walking Tour are scheduled for Feb. 13. Call 540-672-2728 for more information.
- Children can look for "genuine artifacts with a real archaeologist's trowel" in the Dig for Treasure: Kid-Sized Archaeology laboratory, which is open daily.
- The Visitor Center and Education Center display artifacts and furniture owned by our fourth president and his wife, Dolley.
