Resembling a cross between an Alpine chalet and the Hogwarts School, Mohonk Mountain House rises from the rocky Shawangunk Ridge mountainside. Embracing the shore of a half-mile-long lake, the 267-room hotel was built by Quaker twins Albert and Alfred Smiley. You can join the ranks of the rich and famous who have stayed here — horseback riding, boating, fishing, and meandering through the formal gardens. Ask at the desk for directions to the hotel's Victorian maze. And if it's hiking you're after, you'll need a sturdy set of walking shoes to cover the 85 miles of trails and carriage roads that crisscross the property and the adjacent Mohonk Preserve.
