Cofounder "Spec" Penrose wanted to replicate the great resorts of Europe here near the foot of Cheyenne Mountain, and The Broadmoor's vaulted main entry, with its stonework painted royal blue and highlighted with gold stars, was an auspicious start. Before you check in to one of the resort's 744 rooms, have a drink in the Golden Bee pub — made from a reassembled 19th-century pub that was shipped in pieces from England — or stroll around the private lake. Or just laze in a wooden lounge chair and gaze at the mountains, listening as the carillon of the nearby Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun rings from a ridge high above you.
