87 miles NE of Wilmington
Less than 50 miles inland, on U.S. 70 and U.S. 17, New Bern is the state's second-oldest town (after Bath), lying between the Neuse and Trent rivers, where swimming, boating, and both fresh- and saltwater fishing are favorite pastimes. Its Historic District merits a visit -- it's filled with Georgian, Victorian, and classical-Revival architecture.
