If you're driving through Mississippi, the capital city of Jackson -- a pleasant if not particularly picturesque city of 184,000 people -- makes a good home base for exploring sites in the southern half of the state. It's also your best alternative to flying into Memphis, Tennessee, which is just a few miles over the border from the northwest corner of Mississippi.
