What is RSS?

RSS (or Really Simple Syndication) is a way of sharing headlines and news from websites or weblogs (blogs) and have them fed automatically to your computer, for free.

The same format can be used to deliver other media goodies, like music-RSS is used in "podcasts", for example.

Never heard of it? Or, wondering what all the fuss is about?

You may already be using RSS without knowing it - for example, this technology is used by many web sites to let you create a customized "desktop" with constantly updated boxes containing news stories, weather and sports scores.

Nowadays, you will see a small orange icon with the initials RSS or XML on many web sites. RSSThis indicates that the site offers a free RSS feed that you can access. The trick is, it still takes a few steps and a little bit of knowledge to do so.

In the near future, many programs will most likely evolve that make it super-simple for people to use RSS to read content from their favorite sites and blogs and get the latest music or shows via podcasts. For now, it takes a little work. But these tools have been rocketing in popularity, because once you learn how to use them, they offer access to so much free, useful, or fun stuff from the web.
