What a difference a year makes.
At this time last year, AARP Nevada had just started a Facebook fan page. Staff had barely begun to use the site to communicate with the 25+ people who’d signed on as fans.

Twitter was something AARP’s national office did; few state offices had even considered developing a Twitter feed.
Flash forward to today, and we’ve more than doubled our Nevada fan base on Facebook and Twitter. Nearly every AARP state office hosts its own Facebook and Twitter account.
Why? Well, AARP research suggests we must. Over a quarter (27%) of all Americans over 50 use social media sites, with Facebook being the most popular. Women 55+ are the fastest growing demographic to adopt Facebook. If we’re not there, we’re missing a unique opportunity to share topical information and relevant tips to the people we serve.
Why Members Might Want to Sign Up for AARP Social Media Sites
So what’s in it for you? Well, quite a bit actually. We try to post information that is Nevada specific, like events or activities you might want to hear about—AARP telephone town halls on a variety of subjects, AARP sponsored events, opportunities to join us at utilities hearings and at the legislature, or chances to write your elected officials. We also post information about local events where AARP members can purchase discounted tickets and meet other local members.
And did you know that you do not have to have a Facebook account to look at a particular Facebook page? That’s right, if you want to periodically check AARP Nevada’s Facebook page to see what we’re sharing, you can… anytime. Eventually, if you like it, perhaps you’ll decide to “like” us. And you can always access our webpage as well.
