The Smart Bed

Researchers have long sought to measure people's health markers while they slept. Now a new product — called Smart Bed — is allowing that research to advance without forcing patients to snooze in designated sleep centers or wear awkward wires and monitors to bed.

At the heart of the Smart Bed, the brainchild of two former Apple employees, is a small sensor pad that is placed under your mattress to monitor vital signs — motion, heart rate, respiration — during sleep. Gone are the days of awkward wires disrupting a good night's rest for the sake of health care. The new product is being used by numerous senior care facilities, and is expected to be available to consumers later in 2012.
