West Virginia Seeks Tax-Aide Volunteers

By: States: West Virginia | Source: AARP.org

AARP’s Tax-Aide program has a volunteer opportunity that’s just right for you.

In West Virginia next spring about 180 trained volunteers will help low- to middle-income taxpayers prepare and file their tax returns. Special attention will be given to individuals age 60 and older

There are more than 45 AARP Tax-Aide sites across the Mountain State.  The sites are found in locations convenient for taxpayers to get to, ranging from senior centers and libraries to grocery stores and malls.

Trained volunteers will greet clients, fill out forms using tax preparation software, manage computers, publicize the program and assist in variety of other roles.

AARP West Virginia State Director Gaylene Miller said one of the program's goals is to make sure that Tax-Aide services are available and accessible to West Virginians who can least afford to pay for tax preparation.

"We are constantly recruiting new volunteers and continually working to identify new site locations in our communities," Miller said.

Bruce Gelsinger, volunteer regional  coordinator for the program, said, “We are always looking for  volunteers to lead, administer and support this program at the various sites around the state.  We encourage people to join our Tax-Aide team.  It's a rewarding experience and it really provides a valuable community service."

An AARP Foundation program, Tax-Aide began in 1968 with only four volunteers who served 100 people in that tax season.  Today the AARP Tax-Aide program has attracted more than 34,600 volunteers and has helped over 47 million people file their tax returns!
