WVU Hospitals Make AARP’s Best Employer List

By: States: West Virginia | Source: AARP.org

AARP has again recognized West Virginia University Hospitals as one of the Best Employers for Workers 50 and Over. It is the fifth time WVU Hospitals has been named to the annual list which recognizes companies and organizations based on how they address issues affecting the aging labor force.

It is estimated that about one-third of the U.S. workforce will be age 50 and over by about 2016, reflecting an increase from 28 percent in 2007. As the number of workers 50 and under declines, the importance of attracting and retaining mature workers is becoming increasingly important for employers as they look toward future stability and growth.

WVU Hospitals was judged on its recruiting practices, opportunities for professional development, workplace accommodations, alternative work options, health benefits, retiree benefits and age diversity.

We are delighted that West Virginia University Hospitals has been selected,” said AARP State Director Gaylene Miller, “WVUH has offered a number of progressive policies in its approach toward older workers,” she added.

WVU Hospitals President and CEO Bruce McClymonds said, “We are honored to once again receive this award in recognition of our efforts to provide our employee who are 50 and older with the best workplace benefits in the region.”

Francis Boyle, R.N., nurse manager of WVUH’s Medical Intensive Care Unit, is one of the employees over 50. A graduate of the WVU School of Nursing, he credits WVUH with providing mentoring and training that enabled him to hone his skills as a critical care nurse and be promoted to charge nurse and leader. He is now manager of the Medical Intensive Care Unit.

“WVUH allows me to practice nursing autonomously within the framework of a team effort, to be of maximum service and continue to grow professionally,” Boyle said. “Senior leadership acknowledges the seasoned nurses and employees at WVUH and often relies upon them for their insights and skills.”

The hospital system currently employs more than 1,000 people age 50 and older, representing about 23 percent of their workforce.

Previously, AARP gave the honor of naming WVU Hospitals to the Best Employers for Workers 50 and Over list each year from 2004 to 2007.
