West Virginia's Divided We Fail initiative blitzed the southern coalfields Aug. 12 and 13 with a community blitz in Beckley.
The blitz consisted of two days of events, including an opinion leader forum, two resolutions supporting Divided We Fail from Beckley Mayor Emmett Pugh and the Raleigh County Commission, and a Consumer University with a community conversation focusing on financial security.
More than 50 people attended the opinion leader forum, where business, labor and financial experts discussed Social Security, increasing financial literacy and other related topics. John Caine, Associate Regional Director for the Southeast Region, was the moderator. Jill Moorefield, Director of Beckley Renaissance, presented a resolution on behalf of Mayor Pugh. Raleigh County Commission President Pat Reed presented one from county government.
Panelists included: Michael Cavendish, Wachovia Securities; Lee Evans, Service Employees International Union; Ellen Taylor, Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce; Deana Gwinn, Chase; Robert Jeffries, Social Security Administration and Carroll Simpkins, Simpkins & Associates.
At Consumer University: Financial Literacy 101, residents of southern West Virginia learned how to protect their identity, received tips on safe investing and how to avoid internet scams. The participants also engaged in a lively conversation on financial security topics during a town hall meeting style forum.
Presenters from the Social Security Administration, the AARP Foundation, the Internet Crime Complain Center, the West Virginia Securities Commission and the state tax department provided valuable information for the attendees.
