The nomination process for the 2009 Andrus Award, AARP’s highest honor for community service, is now open.  Each state selects a recipient who has most improved life for our members and our communities.  You can find the nomination form at:  http://www.aarp.org/makeadifference/volunteer/articles/andrus_award_nomination_form.html

You can find the specific rules for nominating here: http://www.aarp.org/makeadifference/volunteer/articles/Andrus_Awards_2009_Eligibility.html.

The nominees must be AARP volunteers or members, either currently or during 2008.  Their service work need not be for AARP.  The service must have been done on a volunteer basis.  No paid work will be considered.  Couples or partners who perform service work together can be nominated together.  However, teams of volunteers are not eligible.

Last year’s winner was Marian Yunghans of Bellingham.  Yunghans has held a number of volunteer positions with AARP, including AARP Driver Safety Program Instructor and State Communications Specialist.  She is currently serving as AARP Tax-Aide State Coordinator, overseeing all AARP Tax-Aide operations in the state.  She has also been very active volunteering for the American Red Cross.  Washington Secretary of State Sam Reed recognized Marian’s vast contributions to the community in a 2003 televised ceremony in Bellingham.

"It's a rare and high privilege to be in a position to help people understand the difference they can make, not only in their own lives, but in the lives of others by simply giving of themselves,” said Yunghans.  “Volunteering is a life changing experience and a symbol of power than can move the world."

“AARP has long valued the spirit of volunteerism and the important contributions volunteers make to their communities, neighbors, and the programs they serve,” says AARP State President John Barnett.  “Marian’s dedication to community service is a symbol to us all that we can work together for positive social change.”

The Andrus Award exists to honor our star volunteers and encourage new ones to get involved.  Visit the links above and nominate someone today.
