Statewide 2009 was a busy year for AARP Utah. Staying Sharp and Fraud Forums occurred in Tooele, Castle Dale, Heber City, Beaver, and Ephraim. We presented Wise Use of Medications seminars in Salt Lake, Washington, Uintah and Emery Counties. Numerous AARP Utah volunteers participated in Connecting to Serve Days in St. George, Salt Lake, and Price and Weber County volunteers helped to make the Ogden Valley Balloon and Arts Festival a soaring success! In June the Team AARP Utah participated in its second annual MS Bike Ride. Members and others attended AARP Utah Nights at the Utah Grizzlies, Salt Lake Bees and Real Salt Lake. In September AARP Utah sponsored the Utah State Fair’s Senior Wii Bowling Tournament.
Here are just a few ways Utahns can become engaged with AARP Utah in 2010.
Towards the end of January the Utah Legislature begins its 45-day General Session. In coming weeks AARP Utah will outline its advocacy priorities, letting members and others know how to become involved. AARP Tax-Aide provides free tax preparation service from February 1 - April 15 at sites statewide. Directed toward low-to-middle income taxpayers, special attention is given to the needs of those 60 and over.
Early in 2010, go to the Utah Tax Aide site for sites near you.
AARP Utah continues to offer Wise Use of Medications presentations and Financial Security workshops as well as other educational programs. Contact Gail Goodwin, if your community group or organization would like a program presented.
The Driver Safety Program offers four-hour classroom sessions in communities year-round, as well as online courses. Find a class near you. A joint program of AARP, AAA, and The American Occupational Therapy Association, CarFit gives older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles "fit" them. A trained professional asks some simple questions; then completes a 12-point CarFit checklist. The entire process takes about 20 minutes. If your group is having an event where you think a CarFit opportunity might work, please contact: Paulette Welch.
