Make saving easy – AARP Utah is spreading the word to employers that 95 percent of U.S. workers say automatic enrollment in a 401(k) plan makes it easier to start saving for retirement.

With traditional 401(k) plans, many workers who could start saving never get around to signing up. When employers offer automatic enrollment, with the option to back out, participation rates soar.

AARP, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority and the Retirement Security Project have launched a national coalition called Retirement Made Simpler, which promotes the benefits of auto-enrollment in 401(k)s. In addition, AARP Utah offers presentations to employers and other groups on request. For more information, call 801-233-2064.

Access to care – When Utah lawmakers gather for the 45-day session beginning Jan. 21, health care reform will be high on their agenda. AARP is asking legislators to make quality health care affordable for as many residents as possible. One concept up for consideration will be a "health insurance exchange," which would allow consumers to comparison-shop for coverage.

AARP members can learn about this and other proposals by tracking legislation at http://www.le.state.ut.us. In addition, AARP Utah will post legislative updates online. For details, call 1-866-448-3616 toll free. To contact legislators about health care reform, call 801-538-1029 (House) and 801-538-1035 (Senate).
