During the week of May 5, 2008 join our staff and volunteers in Day of Service events throughout Utah! AARP’s National Day of Service is now a yearly event that came about as a response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. One day each year since then, staff and volunteers have turned away from business as usual to model AARP founder Ethel Percy Andrus’ motto, “To serve, not to be served.”
The 2008 National Day of Service is set for Thursday, May 8, but we will have multiple opportunities where you can help statewide all during that week. You will have an opportunity to meet AARP members and others in your community and gain the satisfying knowledge that you’ve helped contribute to a worthwhile endeavor.
Past projects have included last year’s project of sprucing up classrooms with paint at the Ogden Nature Center and stuffing packets for the Center’s fundraising event. In 2006 volunteers with Day of Service provided landscaping assistance for two Habitat for Humanity homes in Heber City.
This year for the first time, AARP Utah is providing Day of Service activities in a number of locations in the state with the opportunity for community members to get involved in their area. Day of Service events usually last a half day but can go longer if the endeavor warrants it.
To sign-up for a Day of Service event in your area, please contact Gail Goodwin in the AARP Utah state office at 801.233.2064 or ggoodwin@aarp.org.
