For too long, Washington politicians have failed to address our health care and financial security worries. While Congress debates one plan after another, the public is left with skyrocketing bills, unaffordable premiums, high deductibles and eroding benefits. The intertwined issues of financial security and health care affordability affect all generations, but it is a burden especially heavy for those caught in the middle still raising their own children, yet very much concerned about their aging parents.

As part of the on-going Divided We Fail effort, AARP Utah is hosting community dialogues on the important issues of accessible, affordable, quality healthcare and lifetime financial security throughout the state in 2008. To date Conversations have been held in St. George, Ogden, Cedar City, Price and Logan. More conversations are tentatively scheduled for Davis County, Tooele, the Uintah Basin, Park City, and Ephraim in the second half of the year.

State legislators and other elected officials, business leaders, health care workers, students and other citizens come together in enlightening and lively conversations that consider the benefits and drawbacks of the three approaches presented for discussion:
1) It is what government was designed to do.
2) It is up to you.
3) It is everyone’s responsibility.

The ensuing discussion considers the pros and cons of each approach—not searching for answers, but searching for common ground, stimulating dialogue and becoming more knowledgeable about the complexity and trade-offs of the issues.
