Utahns for Ethical Government [UEG] is on the go statewide with its petition drive to obtain the 95,000 signatures of registered voters that are needed in order to place its ethics reform initiative on the November 2010 general election ballot.
AARP Utah actively supports this initiative. Those interested in helping to gather signatures or in simply signing the petition may find local contacts in their area by going to the Utahns for Ethical Government. UEG is looking for interested persons statewide to help with the signature gathering. Local contacts will provide packets and instructions on how to properly gather signatures in compliance with the requirements for initiative efforts in the state of Utah. The UEG petition drive continues until April 2010.
The initiative, if placed on the ballot and passed in the 2010 election, would enact a strict code of ethical standards for Utah lawmakers and create an Independent Ethics Commission to apply the code and make enforcement recommendations to the Utah Legislature. To learn more about the UEG effort including a rebuttal to misinformation and initiative language taken out of context entitled, “Setting the Record Straight,” please go to the Utahns for Ethical Government Web site.
Please note: Although the Fair Boundaries initiative, which AARP Utah also actively supports, and Utahns for Ethical Government are both currently collecting signatures, UEG is a separate initiative effort from Fair Boundaries. Please look for opportunities in your area where you can sign both petitions.
Both campaigns will be actively seeking signatures at a variety of venues including public events, door-to-door and individual social gatherings. Both initiatives are interested in improving government accountability and public trust, Fair Boundaries with respect to legislative redistricting, and Utahns for Ethical Government with respect to legislative ethics.
