Conversations on Health Care

By: State: South Dakota | Source: AARP.org

Whether you are 5 or 95, health care issues affect each and every one of us, from each and every generation. We all have a personal stake in the health reform debate heating up in Washington.

“AARP believes everyone should have affordable health care choices. We also believe it is critical for individuals to understand what’s being proposed in Congress, and learn how it will affect them, their families and their health care,” said Sarah Jennings, state director for ARRP South Dakota.

To help inform South Dakotans of every generation, AARP South Dakota and South Dakota Public Broadcasting are teaming up to present  “Conversations on Health Care”. The programs, to be broadcast on SDPB Radio, SDPB Television and on sdpb.org will take an in depth look at the issue of health reform and the issues that affect us all.

The first program will be taped for broadcast Tuesday, August 18 at 7:00 pm at Northern State University’s Johnson Fine Arts Center.  During this event, former South Dakota Senator Tom Daschle will share his unique perspective on the health reform debate along with a panel of representatives with varying viewpoints to help you understand how health reform will affect you and your family. AARP National Board member, Skip Humphrey will be part of the panel discussion. AARP members are encouraged to attend and participate in the program by submitting questions in advance, via email at sdaarp@aarp.org, or on comment cards prior to the start of the program. Anyone interested in attending the taping on August 18th, should register by calling 1-877-926-8300.

“We’re working with South Dakota Public Broadcasting to ensure questions from our members are addressed during the panel discussion,” said Jennings. “We look forward to a candid, yet constructive dialogue between our members, Former Senator Daschle, Mr. Humphrey, and the other stakeholders participating in this important conversation.”

The program will be broadcast on SDPB Radio August 25th, at Noon CDT, and on SDPB Television at 8:00 p.m. CDT.

A second program will air on SDPB Radio August 27th at Noon CDT, and on SDPB Television at 8:00 p.m. CDT, featuring South Dakota’s Congressional delegation.    Senators Tim Johnson and John Thune, as well as Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin will discuss the various proposals in Congress and share their positions on the proposed measures.

Jennings continued, “Health care isn’t a Democratic issue, or a Republican issue, it is an American issue. We appreciate our delegation’s participation in these broadcasts and willingness to have a meaningful discussion on health reform.”
