AARP South Dakota is pleased to announce United States Representative Stephanie Herseth - Sandlin joined dozens of other members of congress in pledging to support the ideals of Divided We Fail and focus on bi-partisanship and effective solutions for Americans' health and financial security concerns.

The AARP South Dakota staff asked all of South Dakota's Congressional delegates to sign the pledge following a rally on Capitol Hill July 25.

Senators Tim Johnson and John Thune have also received copies of the pledge to review.

The pledge focuses on bi-partisanship and effective solutions. It acknowledges that "Americans want answers, action and accountability from their elected officials - not legislative stalemate" and provides a list of key health and financial areas in need of Congressional attention.

The pledge language reads as follows:

I am committed to working with my colleagues across the aisle to develop and implement policies that provide all Americans with access to quality, affordable health care and lifetime financial security. I understand that Americans want answers, action and accountability from their elected officials - not legislative stalemate. The time has come to address these critical national priorities.

I pledge to work across party lines to sponsor or support legislation that seeks to:

Provide every American with access to quality, affordable health care, including:
  • Information about the quality, cost, and effectiveness of health care services
  • Policies that prevent illness and promote good health
  • Policies that reduce health care costs while maintaining quality of care
  • The development of secure health information technology and electronic health records
  • Choices when it comes to long-term care service delivery and affordable financing options
  • Strengthen Social Security in a manner that treats all generations fairly
  • Provide Americans with greater access to retirement plans, financial incentives to save, and tools to better manage their finances and help prepare them for retirement
  • Develop policies that help ensure that all workers-regardless of age-can continue to work and contribute to society

The AARP South Dakota Staff joined more than 2,000 others for the rally on Capitol Hill in an effort to draw attention to Divided We Fail and further AARP's goal of amplifying the voices of AARP's nearly 39 million members, including 100,000 in South Dakota.

"By taking our most pressing domestic issues to the doorstep of Congress, we are advancing the debate and pushing ahead for solutions for every American," said AARP CEO Bill Novelli.
