Message from State Director, Sarah Jennings

Last week in Sioux Falls, the state office held a series of events in Sioux Falls over a three-day period to highlight the Divided We Fail effort. It was an exciting three days during which we aggressively took the Divided We Fail message to the media, elected officials, candidates for office, AARP members and the public.

An unexpected and unplanned highlight of the three days was Senator Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign visit in Sioux Falls. As you know, AARP volunteers across the United States have been wearing our red Divided We Fail T-shirts at presidential campaign events in every state—our volunteers nationwide are committed to showing ALL of the presidential candidates that the Divided We Fail effort is active in every corner of our country to drive home the point that action must be taken on the issues of health care and financial security.

The Clinton event last week was the first time we had a chance to show a candidate that Divided We Fail is alive and well in South Dakota, and it was a great experience. With approximately 24 hours notice, we were able to get 18 volunteers and staff in red shirts to go to the Clinton event, and at the event we were able to position ourselves so that Senator Clinton saw the Divided We Fail shirts in all directions.

I was impressed and grateful at the willingness of our volunteers to attend the event on such short notice, and we're looking forward to wearing our red shirts again in the coming weeks at events held by other presidential candidates. And, if you would like to join us at these events in a red Divided We Fail shirt, let me know and we'll make sure to include you in our plans! You can email me at sdjennings@aarp.org.

Thanks to our great state office team and our volunteer leaders for making last week's blitz a success! And for those of you reading this who are from other parts of the state, we're planning Divided We Fail events all over South Dakota in the coming months, so check our website or call the office (1-866-542-8172) to get more information on events near you!
