Divided We Fail Takes Flight in May

Thousands of South Dakotans struggle every day with the rising cost of health care and saving for retirement. That’s why AARP is leading Divided We Fail, an initiative to give voice to millions of Americans who are tired of letting Washington gridlock stand in the way of affordable, quality health care and lifetime financial security. In May, the AARP State office will launch a series of events statewide to draw attention to these critical issues.
Thursday, May 8, we will highlight the need for identity protection as a part of financial security. From 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Hy-Vee parking lot at 26th and Marion Ave., the AARP state office is sponsoring a “Spring Cleaning-Shred It” event. Dakota Data Shred will be on hand to offer free, secure document destruction. Now is the time to clean out your piles of personal papers and forage through your ancient files of bank and credit card statements and cancelled checks. All you have to do is drop them off and Dakota Data Shred will shred them safely and securely.
Also May 8, from 3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m., elected officials currently in office and candidates for the legislature office are invited to the AARP State Office in Sioux Falls for an open house. It’s an opportunity for our leaders, and candidates for public office to hear how their involvement will drive solutions to the challenges of access to quality affordable health care and long-term financial security we all face.
Friday, May 9th, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., it’s your turn to voice your concerns and ideas on health care and financial security. Through this conversation we hope to gather diverse perspectives from business owners, community leaders, medical and financial professionals, and South Dakotans of all ages on these compelling issues. Come share your experiences and challenges. Offer your suggestions and solutions. Your involvement will help shape the debate on health care and financial security for the future.
Join us for a little fun Friday, May 9th, from 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. at the Center for Active Generations in Sioux Falls (2300 W. 46th Street, south of the Western Mall). To celebrate our 50th anniversary, we’re having a sock hop! Step back into the ‘50s, wear your poodle skirts and leather jackets–enjoy ‘50s music and refreshments. Your kids and grandkids are welcome, too.
And, on Saturday, May 10, we can’t talk about financial security with out giving you the tools and information to build a secure financial future. From 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Sioux Falls Convention Center, AARP is hosting a Work, Save, Manage, and Protect seminar.
We believe South Dakotans of all ages should have the tools to help work effectively, manage their finances, and save for the future. We are committed to giving South Dakotans access to easy to understand information to help you increase your financial literacy and manage your money wisely. Make plans to attend these FREE, high-energy, informative sessions. More than two dozen different topics are offered throughout the day. Attend one session or as many sessions as you choose. Light refreshments will be served. AARP membership is not necessary to attend, but we encourage you to register by calling 1-877-926-8300.
After the events in Sioux Falls in May, we’ll take the show on the road. Stay tuned for details on our stops in Rapid City June 30-July 1 and in Huron, August 29th and 30th. Be sure to check back to www.aarp.org/sd for additional information and scheduling details.
