AARP South Dakota Helps Individuals Build a Secure Financial Future
With the economy on shaky ground, and personal savings at the lowest level since the Great Depression, only a quarter (27 percent) of people age 40 and older are confident they and their spouse will have enough money to live comfortably throughout retirement. Three quarters of Americans struggle to find enough resources to fund even a modest level of comfort in retirement. And, more than half of South Dakota retirees rely on Social Security income to stay out of poverty.
“This is a grim reality check for those in or facing retirement,” says Sarah Jennings, State Director for AARP South Dakota. “AARP believes this is unacceptable. Some simple planning and preparation can put retirement back on solid ground.”
To help South Dakotans gain peace of mind about their long-term financial security, AARP South Dakota is offering a FREE, informational financial management seminar Monday, June 30 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Sessions on more than a dozen topics will be offered from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Attendees can choose one, two or as many sessions as they like. Topics include Building a Better Retirement Experience, Can You Afford to Retire, Estate Planning, Insurance Fraud, Schemes and Scams, Protecting Your Nest Egg, Living on Your Income When Expenses Rise and much more.
“People are working harder than ever to just get by, with little left over to save. AARP believes South Dakotans of all ages should have the tools to work effectively, save for the future, manage their finances, and protect their nest egg.” Jennings said. “AARP is committed to helping individuals increase financial literacy, and build secure financial futures.”
AARP membership is not necessary to participate. Registration opens June 15. To register and build a secure financial future, call toll free 1-877-926-8300.
Additionally, AARP will host lunch-hour financial workshops Wednesday, July 16, in Mitchell, and Thursday, July 17, in Milbank. Friday, August 29, AARP will hold a Save, Manage, Protect Financial Management Seminar in Huron at the Crossroads Hotel from 1-8 p.m. Attend one session or as many as you choose. AARP membership is not necessary to attend. Registration for these events opens two weeks prior to event date, or email sdaarp@aarp.org to request registration information.
