Feeling jittery about your financial future? Count yourself part of a large, jumpy crowd.
Only one quarter (27 percent) of people age 40 and over are very confident that they and their
spouse will have enough money to live comfortably throughout retirement. A whopping three-quarters of us are struggling to scare up enough resources to fund even a modest level of comfort.
The question at the root of our financial insecurity is "Can I ever afford to retire and live the good life?" For the first time in generations, Americans are worried the answer may be no.
Traditionally, a solid retirement income rested on three sources: Social Security, a lifelong pension benefit from an employer, and personal savings. More and more, working past the traditional retirement age is added to that mix.
You can help prepare for the future by attending an AARP financial security event.
May 10, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., AARP South Dakota will host a financial seminar at the Sioux Falls Convention Center. "Work, Save, Manage and Protect" seminars are designed to help individuals get, or stay on the right track for a secure future. "Work, Save, Manage and Protect" topics include, "Are you saving enough for retirement?", finances in transition for recently divorced or widowed persons, the basics of investing, estate planning, job hunting for the mature worker, organizing your important papers, reducing your dependence on credit, protecting your nest egg and much more.
The event is free and open to the public. "Work, Save, Manage and Protect "seminars will also be held in Rapid City at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, June 30, and in Huron at the Crossroads Hotel August 29.
