Get the Facts and Use the Power

This election year is being characterized as one of the most important in American history. When we look at all our foreign and domestic issues, and add the almost unprecedented and devastating current financial crisis to the long list of concerns Americans have, two issues continue to stand out: financial security and health care reform. These issues have become the centerpiece of AARP's campaign designed to educate our elected officials and set the stage for meaningful national reform.
There is still time to contact your elected officials and remind them that national changes in each of these two areas are no longer to be put off to another day; change has to occur if the American Dream is to continue to inspire our nation. Your voice counts, especially when you speak to the candidates about securing our future. Of all the issues we face, expecting some meaningful level of financial security as we age and the need for health care reform rank very high across our country. Without these changes, it will be increasingly difficult to age with dignity.
So, take time to become informed on the candidates. One way is to watch the candidates for Public Utilities Commission, and the United States House of Representatives debate on South Dakota Public Broadcasting, or listen to the re-broadcast on South Dakota Public Radio. You can find scheduling information at aarp.org/sd, or at sdpb.org. For the national races, take some time to look at the voter guides in AARP the Magazine, or online at aarp.org. Get the facts and use the power.
