Invest wisely – Learning the difference between “too good to pass up” and “too good to be true” is the focus of three free investment forums this spring. Cosponsored by AARP Oregon, the state Department of Consumer and Business Services and the nonprofit Elders in Action, the events are slated for Wilsonville, April 22; Gresham, April 24; and Bend, May 21.

A recent poll of Oregonians age 40 and older found that 60 percent of respondents were concerned about investment fraud and identity theft. People attending the forum will get tips on how to avoid 10 common scams.

A starring role – To highlight the critical role unpaid caregivers play in their families and communities, AARP Oregon and Oregon Public Broadcasting are holding a series of events featuring the PBS special “Caring for Your Parents.”

Slated for Portland (March 29), Corvallis (Apr. 4), Eugene (Apr. 5), and Bend (Apr. 12), the events each offer a resource fair for caregivers and a panel discussion with experts, as well as a screening of the show.

Unpaid family caregivers in Oregon provide an average of 1,080 hours of care a year, a $4.6 billion value, a recent AARP study shows.

Sign up and save – The Oregon Prescription Drug Program is celebrating the first anniversary of its expansion this month with about 50,000 new participants saving on average $25 per prescription. Even so, many people who could benefit from the program have not signed up because they are not aware they are eligible. Any Oregonian without full prescription coverage can now sign up, regardless of age or income, thanks to a ballot measure backed by AARP Oregon in 2006.

Eliminating age and income restrictions was "an important step in ensuring that all Oregonians have access to quality, affordable health care," says Jerry Cohen, AARP state director.

November 2007
Focus on caregivers – AARP Oregon is celebrating National Caregiving Month by cohosting a free forum highlighting resources for family caregivers. “Six out of 10 workers nationwide are balancing work and caregiving, so we know many Oregonians are caregivers,” says Bandana Shrestha, AARP Oregon’s director for community engagement.

The event is slated for Nov. 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Lake Oswego. Participants will find resource guides on work and caregiving. To register, call 1-877-926-8300. For copies of the guides, call 1-866-554-5360 toll free.
