AARP Oregon is seeking nominations for the 2004 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service, AARP's most prestigious volunteer award. The award honors outstanding AARP volunteers who are making a unique and valuable contribution to their communities.

"The award is one way that we recognize our members for the contributions they make to their communities through volunteer service," said Jane Sharp, AARP Oregon state president. "Through this recognition, AARP encourages members and all Oregonians to use their experience, talent and skills for the benefit of their communities."

Sharp noted that AARP volunteers include those who are retired and those who are still working. Sharp said that almost half of all AARP members are still in the workplace, either full-time or part-time. There are 465,000 AARP members in Oregon.

Beverely Thomas of Springfield received the award in 2003. Her many contributions as a volunteer include 10 years as the state coordinator for the AARP Driver Safety Program and 60 years as an active Red Cross volunteer. Don Van Dusen of Bend received the first Andrus Award in 2002 for building wheelchair ramps for more than 100 people who otherwise would have been severely restricted to their homes.
