AARP Applauds Corporation Commission Support for New Energy Efficiency Programs
By: State: Oklahoma |
AARP Oklahoma is pleased that the Oklahoma Corporation Commission has adopted new rules that will require the state's investor own electric utilities to offer energy efficiency programs to customers. AARP, the Office of the Attorney General, environmental groups, the utilities and others have collaborated for over a year on this effort. The recent action addressed AARP's top priorities for the new rules—keeping program costs to a minimum and ensuring low income households and renters have access to energy efficiency programs.
"It is very difficult for lower and fixed income households and renters to invest in energy efficiency measures, such as new refrigerators and insulation," said Sean Voskuhl, AARP Oklahoma Associate State Director. "These rules will provide programs that reach all types of customers, allowing them to lower their energy usage and their energy costs."
With energy prices on the rise, AARP has advocated for affordable, cost-effective energy efficiency programs that enable Oklahomans to lower their electric bills without sacrificing comfort, Voskuhl said.
According to the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy ("ACEEE"), Oklahoma stands at 44th out of 50 states and the District of Columbia ranked on energy efficiency, building codes, appliance standards, tax incentives and conservation by state agencies.
AARP Oklahoma is looking for volunteers interested in helping efforts such as energy regulation. If you are interested in being part of our 770 team—our effort to recruit at least 10 volunteers in all 77 counties—contact us today at aarpok@aarp.org.
