In Ohio and across the country, people remain as susceptible as ever to the schemes of identity thieves. That's why AARP Ohio is encouraging state lawmakers to thwart criminals who aim to steal residents' money and their good names.
AARP applauds Sen. Tom Niehaus of New Richmond for sponsoring Sub. Senate Bill 6, legislation that would institute low-cost security freeze protections that would help prevent Ohio consumers from becoming victims of identity theft. At a recent hearing of Ohio's Senate Judiciary-Civil Justice Committee, AARP Ohio testified in support of Sub. SB 6
"We believe that Sub. SB 6 is strong legislation that gives consumers a powerful tool to stop identity thieves cold. In keeping with the best state security freeze laws, Sub. SB 6 allows consumers to temporarily lift or remove the freeze for a fee of $5 or less," testified Ron Bridges, the AARP Ohio Associate State Director who leads legislative efforts on consumer and health care issues.
"A security freeze will work for Ohio consumers if, and only if, it is simple to use, fast to put in place and to remove, and low in cost," Bridges said. "Security freeze protection already exists for residents in 31 other states."
What You Can Do
AARP encourages you to contact your legislators and tell them to vote yes on Sub. SB 6, because all Ohio consumers deserve the right to a low-cost security freeze, that prevents criminals from opening fraudulent accounts.
You can contact your legislators online via AARP's Legislative Action Center or you can be connected with your legislator's office by calling toll-free at 1-888-844-5009.
