AARP Names 2007 Best Employers for Workers Over 50

Healthcare Providers in Garfield Heights and Lancaster Among Employers Creating Exemplary Policies Toward 50+ Employees

Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster and the Jennings Center for Older Adults in Garfield Heights are among a number of employers across the country demonstrating that enlightened policies toward 50+ employees make good business sense. Both firms are being recognized on AARP's 2007 Best Employers for Workers Over 50 which honors companies and organizations who value the 50+ workforce.

The Jennings Center received recognition for many reasons including its partnership with Kent State University that helped reduce injuries among staff caused by lifting patients. For Fairfield, the achievement was flexible scheduling, which helps accommodate older employees enrolled at universities, technical schools or other educational or career advancement programs.

By 2014, nearly one-third of the total U.S. workforce (32%) will be age 50 or older, up from 27% in 2005. As the proportion of younger workers continues to decline, attracting and retaining the mature, experienced worker will become increasingly critical for employers who seek to retain a competitive edge in today's marketplace. AARP recognizes that a growing number of American employers are developing progressive workplace policies and practices that are meeting the needs of an aging workforce. AARP seeks to share employer best practices with the business community and strive for employment opportunities for older workers.

Other companies who are being acknowledged for their forward thinking policies include the Principal Financial Group and Michelin North America. Each gained honors in what is the seventh year of AARP's annual Best Employers search.

The Best Employers winners were be honored at a dinner in New York on Sept. 26. A CEO roundtable discussion focusing on a new AARP study examining best practices for meeting the needs of 50+ workers among international and multinational corporations representing G7 countries will take place earlier that day. An international conference - titled "Profit from Experience" - follows on Sept. 27, also in New York.
