Do you believe that each of us can make a difference? Do you enjoy working with people?
Are you interested in these issues: access to affordable health care and financial security, affordable Rx drugs, and the value of workers 50 and over?
Would you contact your representatives in Congress and in the Nevada Legislature about issues important to all generations? Then AARP Nevada most likely has a place for you on our volunteer team.
AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization dedicated to enhancing quality of life for all generations through positive social change. Our volunteers help us reach this goal.
Here are some of Nevada's 2008 volunteer opportunities. Please note: You can wear multiple “hats” in the Divided We Fail initiative. There may be more than one opportunity that appeals to you.
DWF Grassroots Outreach Team
Volunteers are needed statewide to independently reach out to their personal networks and deliver the DWF message and materials, and collect signed pledges and stories. Your networks include family and friends, of course, but also your church or faith-based groups, gardening clubs, fraternal organizations, service clubs, home-owners associations, bridge clubs, choir or orchestras, professional organizations, co-workers, senior and community center groups…the list is as individual as you are. This is a grassroots movement in its purest form!
We need volunteers to: identify groups you could reach out to and let us know who they are, arrange the outreach, and give the presentation, including collecting pledges. (We’re happy to provide you with materials and give-aways.) Afterwards, let us know how it went, how many attended, and submit your signed pledges.
Promotions Team
Volunteers are needed to staff tables at local events such as health fairs, senior fairs, job fairs, and other community gatherings.
We need you to: staff tables at local events, deliver AARP’s message and information, and collect signed pledges and stories.
Red Shirt Crew
Volunteers are needed statewide to attend a variety of events to represent DWF and provide visibility while collecting signed pledges. Events could include state-race-candidate events, GOTV-related events, potential Presidential candidate events and other opportunities where we want to make an impact with numbers of people in our DWF shirts.
Volunteeres will need to: attend events wearing the red DWF shirt, answer basic questions about the DWF campaign, and collect signed pledges.
Community Ambassador
Volunteers are needed particularly in small towns and rural areas.
We need you to: alert us to upcoming events in your community, connect with local community/senior centers to make AARP info available, serve as a local contact person for staff, attend and staff local events, and collect signed pledges and stories.
GOTV Team
Volunteers are needed for “Get Out the Vote” activities.
We need you to: participate at various election related events, participate in GOTV “car magnet campaign,” identify and distribute election information to community organizations and locations throughout the community, and collect signed pledges.
Activist Outreach Team
Volunteers are needed in all congressional districts statewide.
We need you as constituents to: ask members of Congress, elected state officials and candidates to sign the DWF pledge, and contact your state and federal representatives via email and phone calls on issues of importance.
For more information, or to volunteer, call 1-866-389-5652 and ask for the Nevada Volunteer Hotline, or email nandersen@aarp.org.
